Profile

Gill has always found inspiration in the traces and marks left behind by the passage of time. These might range from the weathered walls of a building much rebuilt over centuries to signs of an evolving and altered landscape or the more personal marks left by each of us as we move through our lives. Recent work researching the history of Dorset buttons brought her back to times when she worked in tailoring and also to the plain sewing so familiar to her as a child. She is fascinated by the structure of garments and the signs of wear and tear left by constant use and laundering.

She admires the frugality and labour of the ‘make do and mend’ ethos – sides turned to middle on sheets, patching, darning; evidence of care bestowed on simple utilitarian items to prolong their life and usefulness. These simple marks hold so many memories and histories.

Gill often works with deconstructed garments and household linens and loves the feel of the much washed fabrics. Using dyes, discharge processes and screenprint she collages collected fabrics and images to make sensitive, hand stitched collages which are intended to draw the viewer in even perhaps to make connections with their own personal histories and memories.

Gill completed the HE Diploma in Stitched Textiles at East Berkshire College where she gained a Distinction.
